How To Start A Blog

So when I first started blogging about 5 years ago I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and I will admit to you that I made quite a few mistakes! This time around I decided to consult some experts and learned quite a bit from others that had been there done that and made mistakes already.  So if you are not sure about where to start you are in the right place!

The good news is that it's actually easier than most people think. I have learned a ton the last couple of months including how to go from 8 comments to almost 300 in 1 wk!

1. Domain and Hosting

The first thing I did was go to Bluehost and register our domain.

Getting your domain directly through Bluehost I personally feel makes the whole process very easy vs buying your domain through someone else such as godaddy. If you decide to do this, you can get a FREE domain for the first year as long as you buy 12 months worth of Bluehost web hosting. This makes it well worth it to sign up for at least 12 months of hosting as you will be saving a good amount of money this way. You will also get a discounted monthly price when you buy at least 12 months of hosting.

2. Install WordPress

Bluehost makes it very easy to create a WordPress blog and it is FREE!

  • When you are in your cPanel (you will receive a link to this in your welcome email from Bluehost), find and click on the image that says “One Click Install.”

  • Click on the WordPress icon on the next page located under “Blogs.”

  • Click on the “Start” button to begin installation.

  • Once in the installation process click the dropdown menu to the domain you plan on using.

  • Now, you will see “Advanced Options.” Here you choose your username and password for your WordPress website. You should choose something secure.

  • Click “Install Now.”

  • Remember to write down this username and password because I learned the hard way that my Bluehost and WordPress are different!

YAY! You officially have a WordPress blog!

Once your blog is set up there will be tons to learn!!!!

First thing I recommend is choosing a Theme.  Through your wordpress dashboard you can find some free ones (Click "Appearance" then click "Themes"   If you’re like me and not a coder then a theme makes the design work a million times easier.

Another option is to buy a ready to go blog design through Beautiful Dawn Designs. She provides great premade designs for just $39 and this is probably the easiest and quickest design option.

Once I had our domain, hosting, WordPress, and theme, I spent a lot of time tweaking the theme to get the look and feel we wanted. At this point I recommend setting up a free Google Analytics account to track your stats.

I am still learning about plugins everyday but a few I personally use are ClickFunnels, Mailchimp for WP, Google Analytics for WordPress and Ultimate Social Media Plus (to make your posts easy to share with others since people love sharing). They take just a few seconds to install once your site is all set up. If you really want to play around with some cool plugins check out WPBeginner’s Best WordPress Plugins.

Last but not least start writing and sharing value! Have fun!!

That’s great first figure out a specific niche you want to talk about (lifestyle, food, travel, etc the ideas are really endless just make sure you are passionate about it!) then once you set up your blog you can start doing some affiliate marketing to help monetize your blog. There are thousands of ways to make money from your blog first step is to get set up then start working on the money area.

I love this this post makes blogging seem so simple and unintimidating. A lot of people don’t do it because they feel like they can’t figure it out. Simplifying it makes it seem so much easier for people to just jump in!
